Simply purchase a license (perpetual, annual, or monthly) to unlock unlimited patients and continue using all features. Your existing data stays intact - no migration needed.

BackTrack uses file-based licensing:

• You'll receive a backtrack.license file via email
• Place it in the same directory as the BackTrack application
• The software validates your license on startup
• One license covers unlimited computers and users within your practice
• Future versions will include automatic license updates via "call home" features

Yes! You can upgrade from monthly to annual, or convert to a perpetual license at any time. If you've paid for subscription time within the first year, we'll credit that toward a perpetual license purchase.

A trial license is your best way to test BackTrack before committing to a paid plan. We cannot give refunds for perpetual licenses, and there is no cost to (or refund for) a trial license. Monthly and annual subscriptions may be cancelled at any time, but we do not provide prorated refunds for unused time.

No. One license covers your entire practice with unlimited staff accounts. No per-user fees, no transaction fees, no surprise charges.

Your data is stored locally on your computers in encrypted SQLite databases. We do not store your data on our servers unless you explicitly enable cloud sync features (future release).

BackTrack uses multiple layers of security:

• AES-256-GCM encryption for all databases
• Argon2id key derivation for password protection
• Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) support via TOTP
• User activity logging and audit trails
• Role-based access control (RBAC)
• Encrypted backups

Your data is as secure as your operating system and physical security measures.

BackTrack provides the technical safeguards required for HIPAA compliance (encryption, access controls, audit logs). However, HIPAA compliance also requires organizational policies, staff training, and proper use of the software. You are responsible for implementing appropriate administrative and physical safeguards in your practice.

Yes! BackTrack includes built-in encrypted backup functionality. You can:

• Create manual backups at any time
• Schedule automatic backups
• Store backups on external drives or network locations
• Restore from backup if needed

We strongly recommend regular backups as part of your disaster recovery plan.

BackTrack runs on:

• macOS - Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) and Intel Macs
• Windows - Windows 10 and 11
• Linux - Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and other modern distributions (AMD64 and ARM64)

Installers (.pkg, .exe, .deb, .rpm) and standalone binaries are available for all platforms.

Yes! One license covers unlimited computers within your practice. You can install BackTrack on front desk computers, exam rooms, or take it home on your laptop. Optional sync features (coming soon) will keep data synchronized across all installations.

We believe our product is intuitive enough and documentation comprehensive enough that your team will not need formal training or setup consulting. However, we would be happy to discuss any needs at fair (or no) cost depending on time required. We want you to be successful and independent.

No! BackTrack works completely offline. You only need internet for:

• Downloading the software and updates
• Optional cloud sync (future feature)
• Optional online patient portal (future feature)

Your practice can operate normally even during internet outages.

Support is included with all active licenses.

BackTrack provides multiple recovery options:

• Support Code - A recovery code you set during initial setup
• TOTP/Authenticator App - If MFA is enabled, you can use your authenticator app
• Restore from backup - If you have an older backup with a password you remember

Important: For security reasons, if you lose all recovery options, your data cannot be recovered. This is by design - strong encryption means even we cannot decrypt your data.

We release updates regularly, including:

• Bug fixes - As needed, sometimes weekly
• Security patches - Immediately for critical issues
• New features - Monthly or quarterly
• Module additions - As development completes

All updates are included with active licenses at no additional cost.
